Activist short-sellers actively try to lower the price of a stock by directly influencing the perception of the market on a company commonly through investigative journalism. Activist short-sellers publish research reports which highlight deficiencies in the company’s management, overall corporate strategy, and any scandals the company may be involved in. In January 2023, the activist short-selling firm Hindenburg Research published a report on the Adani Group from India. The stock prices of seven Adani group companies have lost significant value, with Adani Total Gas shares taking the biggest plunge of 56%.
